The Cast of Spotlight

Spotlight is the latest movie by director Tom McCarthy who also wrote it in collaboration with Josh Singer, and it stars a stellar cast that includes Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and Stanley Tucci among others. The movie tells the real story of the Spotlight team from The Boston Globe who, in 2002, uncovered a scandalous story about the catholic church and how it conspired to protect several priests, who committed child molestation, from even losing their jobs.

Two major cinematic trends were not only embraced by “Spotlight”, but rather taken to another level. The movie is so focused on its main theme and topic, it doesn’t waste any time offering background stories for the characters and it doesn’t get distracted by side stories. This is a fresh trend that appears to have dominated the good films in 2015 in particular. In movies like The Revenant, The Big Short and Room for instance, no side stories are offered to support the build up of events or even to lend a helping hand to the cast. They’re all big boys, and girls for that matter .. Let them do their own work!

The second trend is the grouping of big names in the cast. The term “grouping” was carefully selected, because that’s exactly what it was in movies like “Everest”, where it didn’t really work, and “The Big Short”, where it was very successful. However in “Spotlight”, we really have a “team”, not a “group”, we get numerous interactions and we witness them working together firsthand. We get matches of twos, of 3’s, of everybody in the room in some scenes. That whole “room” concept is redefined in “Spotlight”, because with everybody acting cool, professional (as journalists, not actors), and restricted to what they would really say and do in a similar situation, it was easy to see myself in the room, looking around to see reactions that won’t really offer themselves to me, instead of being on the dull side of a screen. I think the term I’m looking for is “realistic”.

What “Spotlight” is discussing is a bone shivering revelation. A very upsetting and enraging crime discovery that didn’t really happen a long time ago. In 2002, George W. Bush was president of the united states and Brazil won their last world cup to date, that’s not the dark ages, and it’s difficult to watch a story proving that it was pretty much medieval around that time! Are our characters angry? Of course they are. Did it show? Of course not, they’re investigative journalists digging deeper into an already discovered story. It’s not like they’re seeing such a story for the first time, it’s daily business for them. That’s where “Spotlight” evolves itself into a pearl and gives us one of the most realistic true stories of the decade.

I’m not trying to say that “Spotlight” is flawless, it’s just so difficult to see the problems when we’re in the presence of artists molding a multi dimensional creation with such grace. Perhaps I would just like to highlight that when the time came for emotions to erupt, it was a bit superficial. I’m talking about the Ruffalo speech that was showcased every time he was nominated for an award and, while it was very well acted, it didn’t feel like the rest of the movie. A movie where everything is boiling under the surface, just the way Michael Keaton and Stanley Tucci portrayed it.

Having said that, I believe all the cast members were at the top of their game. Anybody could’ve been nominated for an Academy award and it would’ve been well merited. Nominations went to Ruffalo for supporting actor, and to McAdams who benefited a lot from the general modesty of female roles, and not performances, in 2015. I don’t believe her performance had the kind of impact that would earn her a nomination should there have been more competitive performance in the same category.

It restores my faith in the concept of redemption to see McCarthy bouncing from “The Cobbler” straight to “Spotlight”. I could always tell that Tom McCarthy is a fine filmmaker and while he delivered good jobs with projects of lower profile like “Win Win” or “The Visitor” or “The Station Agent”, but with “Spotlight”, and especially after “The Cobbler”, his work qualifies as genius.

“Spotlight” went on to claim the prize for best picture at the Oscars. A surprise but not a shock, in fact “Spotlight” is one of the most deserving movies to win the grand prize in the last 10 years.

Begin Again هو فيلم موسيقي درامي، كوميدي شوية… من بطولة: Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Adam Levine, Catherine Keener, Hailee Steinfeld, James Corden, CeeLo Green, Mos Def. قام بكتابه الفيلم واخراجه John Carney.

الــقــصــة
الفيلم بيحكي قصة (Dan) اللي بيقوم بدوره Mark Ruffalo وهو منتج موسيقي ومدير لشركة تسجيلات، قضي حياته في المهنة نظرا لحبه لها، وهو شخصية مغرمة بالموسيقي والاغاني وبيأمل في تطوير هذه الصناعة الرائعة. لكن بيفصل من عمله بالاضافة لفشله في حياته الشخصية مما يصيبه بالاحباط.

علي الجانب الاخر فنحن امام Gretta اللي بتقوم بدورها Keira Knightley كاتبة اغاني ومغنية (بس مش مشهورة يعني ) بس بتعرف تغني.. بتيجي نيويورك مع حبيبها المغني المشهور(Dave) لأن هي مصدر الهام لكل الاغاني بتاعته، لكن بيسيبها لأنه علي علاقة باحد المنتجين.

تشاء الظروف وبيتقابل (دان) مع (جريتتا) فبيعرض عليها انه يعمل لها البوم غنائي نظرا لإيمانه بموهبتها وبالفعل بيتم التحضير للألبوم على أن يتم تسجيله في الشوارع او أي مكان في نيويورك مع فرقة موسيقية مكونة من ناس موهبين في الموسيقي والعزف. وبتبدأ رحلتهم وجولتهم في شوارع نيويورك لتسجيل أغانيهم. وخلال الرحلة دي بتنشأ علاقة صداقة بين (دان) و (جريتتا ).

الـمـمـثـلـيـن وشـخـصـيـاتـهـم
Mark Ruffalo في دورDan. أدائه في الفيلم كان ممتاز واعجبت به جدا ودوره مختلف عن اي دور عمله قبل كده. زي ما قلت، شخصية مغرمة بالموسيقي وإحساسه عالي جدا. ظهر ده في تعبيرات وجهه اكثر من مرة. ايضا ايمانه بكل واحد عنده موهبة موسيقية، فهو واحد همه يعمل اي حاجه عشان يعمل البوم ماحصلش. فالاصرار كان دايما المحرك الاساسي لشخصيته عشان هو بيحب الموسيقي بس مش عشان اهداف انانية. مشاهد علاقته بمراته و بنته وتطوراتها مثّلها بشكل رائع يخليك تتعاطف معاه شوية. كان في شخصيته كوميديا خفيفة ومقبولة لحد ما.

Keira Knightley في دور Gretta، اول مرة تعمل فيلم وتطلع فيه بتغني وبصراحة عجبتني بنسبة 100%. الممثلة دي مفيش دور بتعمله وبيطلع شبه التاني. وفي الدور ده ابدعت، ادائها الرومانسي كان كويس جدا لأن جسدت مشاعر الاخلاص والوفاء في الحب بإتقان ، ولحظات الحزن عملتها حلو.

بالنسبة للجانب الاهم في شخصيتها وهو الجانب الموسيقي فكان اكثر تفوقا في الاداء، دي كاتبة اغاني محترفة وتقدر من تجربة مرت بيها تكتب اغنية بسرعة تعبر عن كل مشاعرها فيها لأن الاغاني هي مصدر الالهام ليها. ادائها للمشاهد الغنائية حلو جدا وكان باين احساسها في كل مشهد.

Adam Levine في دور Dave، هو مغني فعلا وأول مرة يمثل في فيلم. الشخصية مكتوبة حلو و ادائه ليها كان مقبول بالنسبة ان اول مرة يمثل. التغييرات اللي بتحصل في الشخصية بيمثلها حلو. وهو شخصية انانية ومش صادقة في مشاعرها. وهو اظهر كل الحاجات دي وقدرت اتفاعل معاه.

Hailee Steinfeld في دور Violet ابنة (دان)، عملت الدور حلو ومش مفتعل خالص وقدرت اتعاطف مع الفراغ اللي في شخصيتها.

James Corden في دور Steve صديق جريت، Catherine Keener في دور زوجة (دان)، ودول ادوارهم صغيرة وعادية جداً. CeeLo Green دوره صغير برضو بس لطيف.

Mos Def في دور (سول) شريك (دان) في شركة التسجيلات. دوره صغير، 3 مشاهد بس عملهم وحش.. هو انت جاي علي واحد عمل 3 مشاهد وتعترض عليه؟ ايوه معجبنيش وكان سمج. يمكن لو ممثل زي David Cross كان عمله كان هيبقي شغال لأنه عمل دور زييه في فيلم Alvin and the Chipmunks.

السـيناريو والاخراج
السيناريو كان مميز جدا ومكتوب بمهارة شديدة مش اي جمل حوارية وخلاص. كل مشهد كان مكتوب حلو. سيناريو مباشر مافيهوش تعقيدات خالص، يعيب فيه بس بعض الالفاظ الغير محبب نسمعها. لكن الفيلم بالقصة والسيناريو أضفوا روح جميلة جدا عليّا .. سكرييبت مختلف عن اي فيلم موسيقي شوفته، يبعث فيك الامل والحب.

الاخراج كان ممتاز برضه، اصلا اختيار الممثلين كان ممتاز وقدر المخرج يخرجّهم بصورة حلوة جدا. الشخصيات وعلاقتهم ببعضها ظهروا بشكل حلو. مشاهد (دان) مع زوجته ومشاهده مع بنته كانت قليلة بس خرجت بصورة متواضعة جدا ويمكن طلعت كده عشان ماتكونش مفتعلة..؟ يمكن . برع المخرج في اخراج المشاهد الغنائية قوي وكانت من احلي المشاهد لما تشوف الفرقة مع بعض او لما يكون في اغنية، كل ده خرج في صورة جديدة بالنسبة لي. قدر المخرج انه يقنعني ان الموسيقي مصدر الهام شديد جدا لو بتحبها.

الاحساس بالموسيقي ظهر بشكل حلو. استخدم المخرج الفلاش باك مرتين وكان ده مبرر. القصة في ناس ممكن تشوفها بتميل الي السطحية قليلا، لكن في رأيي الاحاسيس الجميلة والموسيقي الرائعة اعطت عمق لمعني الفيلم والاحداث. في تقديري نهاية الفيلم كانت رائعة لأتها مش متوقعة. دي نهاية مختلفة عن اي نهاية تقليدية للنوعية دي من الافلام.

حاجه مهمة جدا لازم اتكلم عنها: الاغاني والموسيقي
لعبوا دور اساسي في الفيلم، ايوه دور اساسي يعني كأنهم بيمثلوا الفيلم. مفيش اغنية في الفيلم الا وكان بيبقي ليها هدف يعني بتقول شئ او بتحكي موقف او بتظهر مشاعر ما. ودي حاجه انا شخصيا انبهرت بيها. يعني لو شلت الاغاني ، الفيلم باظ. حاجه تقريبا انا مشوفتهاش من ايام فيلم The Sound of Music .. يمكن تكون اتعملت في افلام تانية بس انا مشوفتش. كلمات الاغاني كانت حلوة، واتحداك: هتتفرج علي الفيلم وهتقول عاوز اسمع الاغاني بتاعته تاني. موسيقي وكلمات و ريمكسات تحفة.

الـتـقـيــم الـنـهـائـي
Begin Again هو فيلم صعب يتنسي، الاداء الجميل لفريق التمثيل والاغاني والموسيقي كل دي حاجات جعلت من الفيلم نابض بالحياة. عاوز تعرف عنوان المقال اسمه كده ليه ؟ اتفرج علي الفيلم.
